S2 E13: Conspiracy and the FBI in the 70’s

You guys might have heard of J. Edgar Hoover, the former director of the FBI. And when I think of the name J. Edgar Hoover, I think of a bada$$. I think of a man who led this awesome, cool organization, the FBI, for many years. Keeping our country safe from all of the terrible threats that exist around the world. But what if the reason I think that is because J. Edgar Hoover tightly controlled his reputation? And he did this through threats, bribes, and manipulation. In fact it’s even been said that he essentially had dirt on every single congressperson. He literally spied on them so that he could have material with which to bribe them and keep them compliant with his demands. Meanwhile, his organization was almost as focused on spying on American citizens as it was focused on foreign threats. And not violent terrorists, but simply people who dissented – who disagreed with the Vietnam War, how black people were treated, etc.

Well, in the early ’70s J Edgar Hoover got his a$$ handed to him. Not by somebody in Congress, not by somebody in the FBI, not by anyone in the government. No, he got his ass handed to him by a professor. A man who was deeply spiritual and desperately wanted to end the war in Vietnam. And not only that – but this man got away with it.
